UNDERSTANDING YOUR LAB RESULTS: What the Numbers Actually Mean

You just collected your laboratory results. The paper is full of numbers, abbreviations, and ranges. Some numbers have a red flag beside them. Others say HIGH or LOW. And suddenly you feel more confused — and more worried — than before you did the test.
You are not alone. This is one of the most common experiences our patients at Omokos Diagnostics share with us. So we decided to write this guide — in plain, simple language — to help every Nigerian patient understand exactly what their lab results are telling them.

1. How to Read a Lab Result Sheet
Every laboratory result sheet follows a similar structure. Here is what each column means:

| Your Result | The actual value found in your blood, urine, or sample |
| Reference Range / Normal Range | The range considered normal for healthy adults |
| Unit | The measurement unit used (e.g., g/dL, mmol/L, %) |
| Flag (H or L) | H means your result is Higher than normal; L means Lower than normal |
A result outside the normal range does not always mean something is seriously wrong. Age, gender, pregnancy, time of day, and even recent meals can affect results. Context matters.
2. Full Blood Count (FBC) — The Most Common Test
The Full Blood Count, also called Complete Blood Count (CBC), is the most commonly requested test. It examines the different cells in your blood.
Red Blood Cells (RBC) and Haemoglobin (Hb)
Haemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body.

| MCV (Mean Cell Volume) | 80–100 fL | Iron deficiency or thalassaemia | Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency |
Anaemia is very common in Nigeria, especially in women of childbearing age, children, and people with malaria history. Low haemoglobin should never be ignored.
White Blood Cells (WBC) — Your Immune Army
White blood cells fight infections and disease. The total WBC count tells you how active your immune system is.

Platelets — Your Blood Clotting Cells

| Platelet Count | 150,000–400,000 /uL | Risk of bleeding — often seen in malaria, dengue, or typhoid | Risk of clotting — can occur in infection or inflammation |
Low platelets (thrombocytopenia) during a fever in Nigeria should immediately raise suspicion for malaria. Get a malaria test done alongside your FBC.
3. Malaria Parasite (MP) Test
The malaria test checks whether the malaria parasite is present in your blood. There are two main types:

- + (1 plus) = mild infection
- ++ (2 plus) = moderate infection
- +++ (3 plus) = heavy infection
- ++++ (4 plus) = very heavy infection — urgent treatment needed
A negative malaria test does not completely rule out malaria. If symptoms persist, repeat the test after 24 hours or request a thick film examination.
4. Liver Function Tests (LFTs)
Liver function tests check how well your liver is working. The liver processes everything you eat, drink, and take as medication.

| Total Protein | 6.0–8.3 g/dL | Low = malnutrition or liver disease; High = dehydration or infection |
| Albumin | 3.5–5.0 g/dL | Low albumin = liver disease, malnutrition, or kidney disease |
Nigerians with hepatitis B or C often have no symptoms for years. Regular liver function tests are important — especially if you have not checked your hepatitis status.
5. Kidney Function Tests (KFTs)
These tests check how well your kidneys are filtering waste from your blood. The kidneys are silent organs — they can lose up to 50% of their function before you feel any symptoms.

Hypertension and diabetes are the two biggest causes of kidney disease in Nigeria. If you have either condition, check your kidney function at least twice a year.
6. Blood Sugar (Glucose) Tests
Blood sugar tests are used to screen for and monitor diabetes. There are different types depending on when the sample is collected.

- Fasting Blood Sugar = taken after at least 8 hours of not eating
- Random Blood Sugar = taken at any time of day
- HbA1c = the best test for long-term diabetes monitoring
Diabetes is increasingly common in Nigeria, including in young people. If your fasting sugar is above 5.6 mmol/L, do not ignore it. Early action can prevent serious complications.
7. Lipid Profile — Cholesterol and Heart Health
The lipid profile measures the fats in your blood. High cholesterol increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.

LDL is the dangerous cholesterol — it builds up in your arteries. HDL is the protective cholesterol — it clears the arteries. You want LDL LOW and HDL HIGH.
8. Thyroid Function Tests
The thyroid is a small gland in your neck that controls your body’s metabolism, energy, and weight.

Thyroid problems are more common in women and are often mistaken for stress or depression. Unexplained weight gain or loss, persistent fatigue, or hair loss are reasons to check your thyroid.
9. Urinalysis — Urine Test
A urine test checks the health of your kidneys, bladder, and urinary tract. It can also reveal diabetes and infections.

10. Common Questions Patients Ask
My result says HIGH — should I panic?
Not immediately. A single result outside normal range does not confirm disease. Your doctor will look at your symptoms, your history, and may request repeat tests before making any diagnosis. Stay calm and consult your doctor.
Why are my results different from last time?
Many factors affect results — time of day, whether you fasted, recent exercise, stress, medications, and even the laboratory equipment used. Small variations between results are normal. Major changes over time are what doctors watch for.
Can I interpret my own results?
You can use guides like this one to understand what the tests measure. But interpreting results in the context of your health, your symptoms, and your history requires a trained clinician. This guide helps you understand — not diagnose.
How often should I do routine blood tests?
- Healthy adults under 40 — once a year
- Adults with diabetes, hypertension, or chronic illness — every 3 to 6 months
- Pregnant women — as scheduled by your doctor throughout pregnancy
- Children — when recommended by a paediatrician based on symptoms
What should I bring when collecting results?
- Your test request form from your doctor
- Your previous results if available — for comparison
- A list of any medications you are currently taking
- Questions you want to ask — write them down before you come
